| TODAY IN ADVENTURE | | | | Pioneering Woman Mountaineer Dies: Did you know? | | | | On July 18th (that’s today), 1935, the mountaineering community lost pioneering American mountaineer Annie Smith Peck. During Mrs. Peck’s long and adventurous life she climbed, wrote, and lectured about her expeditions to the Alps, Andes, and Rockies. In 1895, she gained an international reputation for climbing the Matterhorn. This accomplishment led to a fervent public discussion about the roles of women in the public sphere because she wore pants, which many people of that time deemed an inappropriate outfit for a woman. Many years later, when she was nearly 60 years old, Mrs. Peck climbed Mount Coropuna in Peru and placed a banner upon the summit to support the right for women to vote. | | | |
