TODAY IN ADVENTURE | | A Tall Tale | | On February 22nd (that's today!), 1976, an American climbing team consisting of John Bragg, Jim Donini, and Jay Wilson made the first ascent of Torre Egger in Patagonia, a peak that is considered by some to be the most difficult summit to reach in the Western Hemisphere. For a portion of their ascent, the Americans followed the famous, yet contentious route of Cesare Maestri. In 1959, Maestri claimed to have made the first ascent of the adjoining peak, Cerro Torre, a groundbreaking achievement for the times. Maestri's partner perished in an avalanche during their descent, and according to Maestri, so did their camera, which could prove their accomplishment. Doubt lingered within the community regarding his claim, however their success lay unchallenged for 17 years, until the Americans discovered that Maestri's gear stopped well below the summit of Cerro Torre, proving that Maestri's claims were more than likely false. | | |
