TODAY IN ADVENTURE Biking on Ice On February 25th (that's today!), 2010, a five-man team of American and Venezuelan cyclists began the first ever human-powered winter circumnavigation of Lake Baikal on mountain bikes. Lake Baikal is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Located in southeastern Siberia, it's the deepest lake in the world, 395 miles in length, and 50 miles across at its widest point. The lake is also host to 1,085 species of plants and 1,550 species of wildlife, including the nerpa, a freshwater seal which is the only mammal living in the lake. The five-man team endured 36 days of tumultuous weather to raise awareness for environmental conservation in Russia, specifically recognizing the Lake Baikal region.
