| TODAY IN ADVENTURE | | | | Thompson Sails the Columbia | | | | On July 9th (that’s today!), 1811, British explorer and mapmaker David Thompson reached the confluence of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. He camped along the banks and erected a pole with a notice of his intention to build a trading post at the site for the North West Company. He sailed onward down the Columbia River and became the first European to sail the entire length of the Columbia. When he arrived at the Pacific Ocean he discovered that he was two months behind the Pacific Fur Company, which had already begun establishing a trading post that they called Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. | | | |
