After a year of waiting in "regulatory limbo," the T-Mobile and Sprint merger has been approved by the US Justice Department. As part of the agreement, T-Mobile has to sell Sprint assets, like Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, to Dish so that Dish can become the fourth major US carrier after the merger.

On a smaller scale, today's news is likely exciting for customers who are hoping that the merger will get them a better signal. (But it'll still be a while before we will see actual results.) On a bigger scale, the effects of this merger will be widespread on everything from competition and innovation to the potential end of the physical SIM card.
