Snap's first Spectacles seemed genius. They were colorful, fun-looking sunglasses that debuted at what felt like the height of Snapchat's cultural importance and made it really easy to record neat, stylized video clips.

Three years later and $250 higher, I'm not so sure Snap has the right formula anymore. The Spectacles 3 are much more expensive; while I'm not going to doubt their bizarre look will have its fans, the new effects offered by the second camera don't seem like they're worth the price.

Maybe I'm wrong — I've never regularly used Snapchat. But it seems like an odd bet from a hardware division that's in need of a hit.
