Apple's September hardware event just wrapped, and (for me, at least) the big surprises came outside of the iPhones.

The Apple Watch getting an always-on display wasn't rumored, and it's been one of the biggest asks. The pricing for both Apple Arcade and Apple TV Plus is pretty competitive, and bundling a one-year TV Plus subscription with new hardware purchases is a strong way to pull people in.

And while the iPhone upgrades were mostly about the cameras (I'm still very skeptical that a wide angle lens is more useful than a telephoto — like, come on, have you ever tried taking a picture of a cat?), the most striking upgrade was more battery life across the line. That's the kind of upgrade that really matters.

TODAY IN TODAY'S APPLE EVENT

+ iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max: triple-camera system, much longer battery, and a green color option

+ iPhone 11: new colors, secondary wide angle camera (not telephoto!), starts at $699 (cheaper than the XR)

+ Apple Watch Series 5: it has an always-on display!

+ New entry-level iPad: 10.2-inch display, $329, A10 chip — no USB-C, but what'd you expect?

+ Apple Arcade: $5 / month, starting September 19th — I maybe wouldn't have led with Frogger as an exclusive...

+ Apple TV Plus: $5 / month, starting November 1st — See looks like a misstep, but the service pricing is good (free year with new hardware purchases, too)

TODAY IN PIXEL LEAKS

+ New photos give the clearest look yet at the Pixel 4's front... and I am not loving the top bezel proportions

TODAY IN OTHER NEWS EXISTS

+ Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater turns 20 this month, so Bijan talked to Tony Hawk:

“Every game, I was involved in the development,” says Hawk. “I would play the builds as I received them.” At the time, that meant getting the discs in the mail with the latest build and then sending feedback. Later consoles made that more difficult because, as Hawk says, it was hard to bring a “giant dev kit Xbox” on the road.
