Yesterday evening, a controversial 2016 memo from a Facebook VP was leaked. It described "the ugly truth" that Facebook's mission to connect everyone could potentially get people killed through bullying or via a terrorist attack organized on its platform, but despite that the company's work was still justified.

Later, our own Casey Newton reported on reactions inside Facebook to the leak, which ranged from dismay at whoever leaked the memo, to empathy for its users whose information has been mishandled, to conspiracy theories.

While the VP did distance himself from the memo, it's clear that in the wake of multiple scandals, Facebook will soon be a far different company than it was when 2018 began.
