I remember reading again and again about OLPC, the One Laptop Per Child project, which was supposed to outfit children everywhere with $100 laptops that could be powered with a hand crank. But like so many pieces of idealistic technology, it eventually disappeared. I never noticed its abscence, but my colleague Adi Robertson did, and she followed up with the people involved to find out what happened. OLPC eventually did ship a computer — you might remember seeing the playful, green laptop — but it cost more than $100 and didn't have that iconic crank. And obviously, it didn't change the world the way it was supposed to. -Jake |
