Nintendo has created something undeniably magical with Labo. Like the cardboard kits themselves, the entire experience seems to be so much more than the sum of its parts. In Andrew Webster’s review for The Verge, he points out that his kids didn’t just enjoy building the kits and playing with the results, they started asking “how” questions. Labo seems like technology from an alternate timeline. A parallel world where peripherals communicate over IR and robots move through vibration. This marriage of alienness and accessibility makes it quintessentially Nintendo. But by lifting off the covers and allowing kids (and adults) to delve into the “how” instead of just taking technology for granted, it could start a learning journey that has no end. No, it’s not just expensive cardboard. Also, thank you for all the replies to last week’s clickbait experiment. I read all of them. You are too kind. -Paul |
