The worst 'will they / won't they' in all of technology has come to pass: T-Mobile and Sprint, after years and years of flirting, have agreed to merge.

It isn't a done deal yet — the merger still has to pass regulatory approval. And I'd hope that it won't: T-Mobile has shown the importance of competition more than any other wireless carrier, becoming a force over the past few years that's threatened Verizon and AT&T, even as it remains much smaller than them.

If T-Mobile swallows Sprint, it'll be about the same size as its major competitors. That'll give it a lot less room to grow, and a lot less of a reason to remain so aggressive in its deals for customers.
