I have this theory about motion smoothing — that setting on TVs that gives everything a soap opera look — and I'm not sure if it makes any sense but here it goes: motion smoothing is going to change TV as we know it. Many (if not most) new TVs activate motion smoothing by default. Many (if not most) people don't even realize this.

Eventually, this is going to lead to most video getting filmed at higher frame rates, because that's just what's going to look normal to everyone. That'll mean changing the look of movies and TV shows all because of a stupid TV setting meant to make football clips look better in the Best Buy showroom.

I have an existential crisis about this every few months, and honestly, I'm not sure it really matters. Lower frame rates are just what I'm used to.
