I went to the Salton Sea earlier this year on vacation. I was actually in Borrego Springs, but my friend thought we should drive out to learn about how this lake is releasing toxic dust. It was a fun trip! But wow the Salton Sea smells absolutely terrible and is really eerie. There are dead fish carcasses all over and everything is abandoned. I almost threw up and had to leave.

Anyway! The Verge's senior feature editor Michael Zelenko went to the Salton Sea a couple months ago and wrote about how its dust is a serious problem that's threatening nearby communities.
