Almost all of the major gadgets in my apartment now charge over USB-C: our phones, my home (and work) laptop, and my Nintendo Switch. And I'm still awed by how convenient it is to be able to plug any of them into any of the many charging cords I have lying around the house. It's immensely convenient.

But last week, I learned just how frustrating USB-C can be. I've had to temporarily switch from a MacBook Pro to a regular MacBook at work — both have USB-C ports, so I figured I'd just plug my USB-C charging hub / monitor into the computer and have everything work as usual. But nope! The monitor works over Thunderbolt, which uses the USB-C connection but is a different spec. Who thought it was a good idea to separate these things?
