USB-C was supposed to be simple — it's one plug that does everything. And it has been that, mostly. But thanks to Thunderbolt 3, a separate standard that uses the exact same port, not all USB-C ports can do the exact same thing, which is pretty confusing!

The group behind USB is trying to fix that with USB 4, which will give USB-C all the powers of Thunderbolt 3. This is supposed to finally, once and for all, simplify USB-C so that it truly becomes the one standard to rule them all. Do I believe this will actually pan out? Absolutely not. But I'm pulling for it.
