I've been testing a ton of low-cost smartphones over the past couple months to figure out exactly how much you need to spend to get something good.

It turns out, there are some surprisingly great options in the $200-$300 range. You can get a phone that, from all angles, looks like something far more expensive — with a great build quality and great screen.

The thing you consistently have to give up on is getting a great camera. Everything under $300 is disappointing right now, which is really too bad. But other than that, the gap between a flagship phone and a budget phone is growing increasingly slim.
