Google released Android 9 Pie this afternoon, but as usual, the launch of a new Android operating system is far from a usual software update. It's only available on a few phones so far, and many of the promised features aren't going to be available until another update arrives this fall.

That all said, I increasingly feel like we should stop worrying so much about Android version numbers and just view it as a big spectrum of feature releases. What are you really missing out on if your phone is still on Nougat? Almost nothing! Android phones absolutely deserve more updates, but some matter a lot more than others.

Android Pie does seem like it'll be one that really matters — at least once Google gets around to releasing its Digital Wellbeing features. Hopefully more phones will have access by then.
