Something you've probably already realized: People have a tendency to take the path of least resistance. The easier the task, the more likely we are to do it. But what if the easier choice isn't the best choice? For example, maybe you spend most of the day sitting in your comfy desk chair because it's easier than standing up to work.

The solution: Add some friction to your life so that the unwanted behavior requires more energy. You could, say, move your desk chair out of your office and into your bedroom and stack your laptop on books. Ta-da! This naturally makes the behavior you want to do (standing more often) easier.

If thoughts of bills, deadlines, and other tasks are dancing in your head and keeping you up, turn on a bedside light and take a few moments to jot down what you need to get done. A 2017 study found that people who spent five minutes writing out a detailed to-do list fell asleep more quickly and reported lower levels of stress than those who simply journaled about the day’s accomplishments.
