The Economist has conducted the first interview with Ahmed al-Sharaa since he assumed Syria’s presidency last week. It was far from clear that Mr Sharaa’s jihadist worldview is behind him. Though he promised presidential elections, he also decried America’s “illegal” military presence in Syria and welcomed negotiations with Russia. Mr Sharaa talked about religious and ethnic inclusivity, but he still has a lot to prove. Meanwhile Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, made the surprising announcement that Donald Trump will delay the imposition of 25% levies on exports from her country. But tariffs on Canada and China are still scheduled to go ahead on Tuesday. Europe may be Mr Trump’s next target. |
