The crash of an Air India plane, moments after it took off from Ahmedabad’s main airport, has left hundreds dead. India’s aviation industry has been modernising quickly, and until today had an improving safety record. But this airport is one of a dwindling number still located near the centre of a major Indian city. That may have magnified the tragedy. That the plane involved was a Boeing 787—the first fatal crash involving the model—may also have repercussions for its maker. In Gaza, meanwhile, Israel has been funding a Palestinian militia, run by a ruthless aid trafficker, which it thinks can chip away at Hamas’s rule. Unsurprisingly, Yasser Abu Shabab, the leader of the Popular Forces, is one of Gaza’s least popular men. |
