Most Influential Author: Larry McMurtry. I’ve read Lonesome Dove four times. It’s my favorite book. It’s the American Odyssey. I even named my son Gus after Augustus McCrae. Great lessons on grit, courage, love, and friendship. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be sad that the book is over when you’re finished. The television mini-series is top-notch, too. Great for a Netflix binge. Favorite Guest I’ve Had on My Podcast: Cal Newport, author of So Good They Can’t Ignore You and Deep Work. He’s got such great insight into the power of focused work in a distracted world. Check out episodes 78 and 168. Words to Live By: Be useful; not important. Favorite Huckberry Purchase: Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket. Great for those cool springs and falls. Classic, rugged, American look. Article I’ve Written That Deserves Another Read: We did an entire series on the biology, psychology, and philosophy of male social status over three years ago. The status drive impacts people's day-to-day lives and sense of well-being in huge ways that most people overlook and don't understand. We think we're not supposed to care about status, but it's so deeply ingrained that it's impossible not to — it's better to learn how to harness that drive in healthy ways than to pretend it's not important. What's on My Wishlist: The Secrid Slimwallet. Always wanted a wallet that could shoot out my credit cards like toast from a toaster. Most Rewarding AoM Moment: We receive lots of letters from men who say AoM has helped them in different ways, from learning how to shave and dress, to becoming socially confident, starting to lift weights, and even deciding to join the military. The most touching, however, was finding out that we helped a few of our guys deal with the death of a parent. It's amazing to know we've been able to give and assist in those most difficult of times. Favorite New Discovery: Midland. It’s a country band based out of Austin. They actually sound like a country band, and do it with 1970s swagger, which — you heard it here first — is on the cusp of a comeback. If I had $500 to Blow on Huckberry: Erstwhile Map. What’s handsomer than an old-school map hanging in an office? Absolute Favorite Huckberry Brand: My entire wardrobe is pretty much Flint and Tinder at this point. Everything looks and feels great, plus, I love that it’s all made right here in the US of A. |
