The key to our morning routine, Japanese toasters, snack hacks, and more.

Hey there,

Andy, Huckberry co-founder here.

Our sweet spot is discovery, and so twice a month we send a special email called The Rundown where we share a few things we and our friends are digging at the moment. It's a fun, quick guide that we hope will inspire you in your own life.

I wanted to personally send you your first Rundown (see below), and thank you for joining the Huckberry community.

See you out there.

Andy

Favorite Huckberry Purchase: I’ve always been a finicky sleeper — err, rather, I was a finicky sleeper before I picked up a couple of these Zoned Dough Pillows from Malouf. They’re perfectly squashy and temperature regulating.

Next Huckberry Purchase: I’m thinking one of the mini-kegs from GrowlerWerks. Would love to pour a delicious pint directly from the fridge.

Lifehack: The Scottish Shower. Best wake-up there is. Always followed by a hot coffee, of course.

Under-Appreciated App: Bear: a great writing, note-taking, and task-tracking app for Mac and iOS that’s easy on the eyes and packed with features like linked notes, hashtags, and a (lifesaving) distraction-free focus mode.

Album I Can’t Stop Listening to: Plural, the new album from Electric Guest. Funky, soulful rock that hits all the right notes. Be sure to check out “Oh Devil” and “Back for Me”.

Best Piece of Advice: Write how you speak.

Movie that Broke my Brain: Primer — a super low-budget 2004 flick about two engineers who accidentally discover time travel. The ensuing loops and interwoven timelines will have you scratching your head for weeks.

Where I’d Retire: In a cabin — Lofoten archipelago in Norway.

Travel Hack: Unless I’m traveling with my kids, I board planes last to avoid the irritation of jockeying for position. Also, the best $15 I ever spent on travel was a power strip with a short cord to make the most of a single adapter when traveling abroad (and the outlet under my seat during the flight).

Nesting Tip: Saatchi Art is indispensable for original large-format paintings and photographs.

Splurge Booze: Varnelli Amaro Dell'Erborista is a highlight in my bitters lineup with its killer trio of rhubarb, chamomile, and campfire.

Podcast Recommendation: In 2016 I swore off crime podcasts and discovered Krista Tippett’s On Being. I love her interviews with Alain de Botton, especially the episode about the true, hard work of love and relationships.

Music For Working: Nils Frahm’s “Says” is the soundtrack to my flow state.

Book That's Changed Your Behavior: It’s a toss-up between Games People Play and Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me), both are brief encyclopedias of the cognitive dissonances that make most of us suffer. One key lesson: People become more certain they are right about something they just did if they can't undo it.

Netflix Recommendation: Happy People: A Year in the Taiga –  A Werner Herzog narrated doc about people living in Russia’s far north boreal forests.

Favorite New Discovery: Japanese Toaster Ovens. One less wart on the kitchen counter.

New Discovery: Peeling garlic fast by shaking the hell out of it

Next Huckberry Purchase: I hesitate to share this because they're a limited run, but between the Damascus steel and the turquoise inlay, I've had my eye on the Wooly Mammoth Tusk Knife since we got them in.

Underrated Outdoor Travel Destination: Las Vegas. There are always great deals on airfare, and aside from Mt. Charleston's slopes, Red Rock Canyon is amazing for trail running, climbing, and camping.

Snack Hack: Turning a potato chip bag into a bowl. The office nearly lost their minds when they saw me doing this at my desk.

Podcast: Reply All has great stories about the crazy world of intrigue, commerce, and puzzling phenomena that surround the internet.

Lifehack: It seems ridiculous but I’ve moved over thirty times in my adult life, and taking a minimalist approach to my belongings—using a loose interpretation of the KonMari Method—has saved my sanity. Everything I own fits easily in my car.

Book: Design for Real Life. Not just for designers, and can really help you get a leg up on the competition.

If I Had $500 to Blow on Huckberry: I’d have to get another set of Matteo Linen Sheets. They're perfect for the Bay Area weather — but they make it that much harder to get out of bed in the morning.

From Huckberry Ambassador, @alexstrohl, The Eastern Region is home to Iceland's only natural reindeer population.
