Today we want to talk about the concept of hunger. One of the toughest parts of any diet is the struggle of dealing with hunger. It's probably the number one reason why most people give up midway through.
Hunger is a powerful feeling - it is both a physical and emotional sensation at the same time. The key to overcoming your hunger is to understand it. The next time you're dealing with feeling hungry, remember that not all hunger is the same!
There are 6 Human Hungers
Each one stems from a different need. We feel constant cravings and dissatisfaction, (often causing us to overeat) because we are not fulfilling the right need with the right thing.
1. Nutritional Hunger
This is the only genuine form of hunger. This is our body telling us that it requires certain nutrients to survive and that we need to replenish them.
2. Thirst
When our bodies are deprived of water, it may communicate this to us through a hunger feeling. That's why some hunger pangs are gone after drinking a glass of water.
3. Cravings / Variety
We crave variety naturally as an evolutionary mechanism to limit our dependence on only one type of food. But our vast choices nowadays causes this instinct to go into overdrive.
4. Low Blood Sugar
This stems from a real health requirement. But misunderstanding this need causes us to consume far more sugar than actually necessary to fulfil it.
5. Emotional Hunger
This is caused by our emotional connections with different foods which are linked to particular memories. Because we subconsciously have these associations, our brain is tricking us into craving something not for a physical need but instead to fulfil an emotional one.
6. Empty Stomach Hunger
Believe it or not, the feeling of an empty stomach does not necessarily mean you are really hungry! We automatically feel like we need to fill up our stomach, but as healthy fasting shows - an empty stomach does not mean genuine hunger. This is one of the leading causes of overeating, because it makes us believe we have not consumed enough.
Before you give in to your next craving, try slowing down. See which of the hungers are the source of your desire to eat, and try to address the need specifically. You'll be surprised at just how often your feeling of hunger is actually just an illusion.
