MSE’s Money Tips Car insurance renewal warning, £121 off Ninja blender, 4.32% savings fix + £100, fast broadband £11/

September's a busy time for car insurance renewals as it's a new car registration month. Yet the best time to find the cheapest quotes is three to four weeks before renewal, so RIGHT NOW if your policy's up next month.

The easy route to do this is via our Compare+ Car Insurance tool (it's still worth checking even if you're not at renewal). It's always crucial to know how your price compares against the market, especially at the moment...

Because while prices have turned a corner - down 16% in the last 12mths after huge year-on-year rises (source: Pearson Ham) - DON'T be complacent and just accept your renewal price if it's similar to last year. Even if it's 10% less, you can likely still beat it. Here's how.

1. Fill in just one questionnaire via our Compare+ Car Insurance tool. It gives you cost-cutting tips as you answer, shows your cheapest insurers from the comparison as a benchmark as well as the cheapest time to buy, and whether to add extra drivers, check other comparisons and more.

As Ian emailed in March: "This past year my car insurance was £656 and I received my renewal letter in late Feb 2025. It had shot up to £1,170, yet nothing had changed on my policy! Used the comparison tool and managed to get exactly the same cover for £481 [saving £689/yr]. Totally delighted!"

2. Insurance is like comedy [pause] timing is everything

The SWEET SPOT to get quotes which could halve your price. We analysed 1.2m quotes to find the optimum time before you want your cover to start to get quotes from new firms. The data shows it bottoms out at 26 days before renewal, though any time between roughly 20 and 27 days should do the job...

The key's to avoid leaving it till the last two weeks, as that's when prices really skyrocket, and possibly even double. This is because insurance is priced on risk, and providers' "actuarial charts" apparently show those who renew last-minute are often a higher risk. Now this is about averages, so it won't work for everyone, but many will be able to save £100s.

Rob emailed in June: "Martin, I won. I recently had a renewal quote for my car insurance which was overly expensive. I followed your advice 26 days before (sweet spot) and used comparison websites. My insurer couldn't match any of the quotes. Thanks to your advice, I have saved over £450/yr on my car insurance. I'm so delighted. Keep helping people save money!"

Not at renewal? Still CHECK NOW in case you can save big by cancelling & renewing early. Many wrongly assume you can't change insurer mid-year. You can, and with prices dropping, it's worth checking.

Check using Compare+, set a policy start date about three weeks ahead, as that's usually the sweet spot for lower premiums. If the new quote is significantly cheaper than what you're paying, it's worth considering - as long as you've not made, or plan to make, a claim for this insurance year.

If you can save big, sign up for your new policy, then cancel your old one. You should get a pro-rata refund for the rest of the year (minus a £50ish admin fee - check the amount before doing this). Yet you usually won't earn the year's no-claims bonus.

As Akshay emailed in June: "Martin & team, thanks to your handy email on car insurance, I discovered I had grossly overpaid my annual renewal, as I rushed into it without checking elsewhere (I know). Using your Compare+ tool, I found a like-for-like policy for much less. I quickly cancelled to be fully refunded, and went with the new insurer, saving £156 in the process. Result! Many thanks to you all, keep up the good work!"

3. More than one car at home? Comparison sites don't check multicar cover, so you'll need to check manually whether it saves you money. Our rule of thumb is: "If you're on a multicar policy, check separate policies to see if you can save; if you're on separate, check multicar."

- Multicar (one policy for all): Probably the best known is Admiral*, but LV*, Aviva, Diamond and Elephant* also offer these policies. Don't worry if your renewals are at different dates, their systems work with that.

- Discounts on separate policies: Axa*, Direct Line, Churchill and Privilege all offer discounts for multiple cars - so it's worth checking, especially if they're cheapest for one of your vehicles.

4. Should you combine car and home cover? It's trial and error, so get prices separately first (see home insurance cost-cutting). Then, especially if one of these is coming up cheapest, check all-in-one policies at Admiral* and LV* (it works even if they have different start dates) and discounts on separate policies at Direct Line, Aviva and Churchill.

You may have heard that since January 2022, car and home insurers have been banned from charging renewing customers more than they charge new customers - to stop the annual 'price-walk' of pushing up prices at each renewal, so that after a few years you've paid a massive loyalty premium.

Yet even though that's gone, auto-renewing is still likely to cost more...

- Some firms have simply boosted prices for all.

- The 'same price for both' rule is channel-specific. For example, if you got insurance direct, your renewal must cost the same as if you were a new direct customer. If you had gone via a comparison site, it must cost the same as a new customer via THAT site (others may be cheaper).

- Pricing varies hugely by firm & by the type of customer that they want to recruit.

- Many firms own more than one brand. They may aim to win new business via new brands, leaving existing brands at higher prices.

All of which means many still see sky-high auto-renewal quotes. Douglas, who emailed in June after his quote went up by 90%, is an example of this: "My renewal was £1,235. It was £650 last year. Used your guidance and got me, the wife and my son on for £537. Not a bad saving - £698/yr!"

Of course, of the millions of readers of this email, some will find their renewal is cheapest. If so, fab. The key is to never assume your renewal is the winner without checking.

If you can find a cheaper quote elsewhere, but like your current insurer's service, then ask it to match your cheapest quote. There's full help in Car & home insurance haggling. Here are a few to start:

- Do it when you're nearing renewal so the polite threat of losing your custom is stronger.
- Get an actual quote as a benchmark to ask it to beat/match.
- Use charm, chutzpah, cheek & a smile (never aggression).
- Don't get rushed into accepting the first offer.

Success rates for car insurance haggling are pretty high. For example, in our latest haggling poll, over 70% of Admiral, AA and Hastings Direct customers who'd tried to haggle told us they'd succeeded.

As Jordan emailed last month: "My car insurance came up for renewal recently, and they offered a £107 discount. I'd have been very happy with that but, after listening to The Martin Lewis Podcast - live from Lord's special, I know haggling pays. So I went to cancel my renewal online, selecting the option that I had a better price from a competitor. My insurer then gave me an extra £70 off. So it's gone from £475 to £298, a big saving [of £177/yr]. A big thanks from Jordan, an avid fan of the pod."

As with any insurance, check the policy details and read exactly what's covered before signing up. Do also ensure the insurer is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (all via Compare+ will be).

That means if you feel you've been treated unfairly, or that your claim has been unfairly rejected (or the payout is too small), you have a right to take 'em to the free Financial Ombudsman.

Check your speed and prepare to ditch, switch and save possibly £500/yr

Don't think of broadband as a monthly cost, but as an annual bill. Then it's easier to see whether you're being ripped off, shelling out £100s/yr more than needed for paltry speeds. The typical out of contract costs for big firms are BT £870/yr at 67Mb, Sky £550/yr at 30Mb, and Virgin £740/yr at 132Mb. If you're one of the seven million out of contract on broadband and paying these sky-high costs, it's time to act - you could bag 264Mb for £335/yr.

So compare what you're paying now with the deals below... which, like all the top deals, are short-term promos, mostly punted out on to comparison sites (and not offered direct, or firms would have to offer existing customers the same). On Universal Credit or similar benefits?	Try a social tariff. Many providers offer special discounted social broadband tariffs, which give long-term cheap prices of £13/mth to £20/mth for 30Mb+. Our comparison shows social tariffs local to you.
Deals ordered by price. Our 'equivalent cost' adds all costs, deducts promo credits & averages over the contract so you can compare easily. Broadband service ratings tend to be worse than other sectors, so all scores are lower. See broadband service poll results.

You no longer need to contact your current provider to switch. Until recently, switch broadband and with some providers you had to contact both your old and new firm (sometimes leaving you paying both during the overlap). Now, regulator Ofcom has rolled out a 'One Touch Switch' service, so the new firm should seamlessly sort it for you.
Don't want to switch? Haggle. According to our June poll, the vast majority of those who'd haggled with the big broadband firms had been successful. Use the deals above as a benchmark. Read full broadband haggling tips.
Slow broadband? Before switching, test your speed - is it the Wi-Fi or the connection? Do a speed check - first via Wi-Fi, then by plugging your device into the router (if you can). If Wi-Fi's a lot slower, try our speed-boosters.
At least 50% of customers must get the advertised speeds at peak times. Plus all bigger providers must also indicate your estimated minimum speed pre-application.
Switching usually only means about 2hrs' downtime. You're told the switch time, and most don't need an engineer, even if you're getting fibre to the premises, though someone may need to look at the externals of your home (you needn't be there). There are exceptions, eg, if moving to or from Virgin (you're told before applying).
Members of cashback sites can sometimes undercut deals. In some cases, the cashback can mean these sites undercut promos elsewhere, though sometimes the deal differs - so check carefully. More in Top cashback sites.

Newbies to savings marketplace Raisin - which lets you save and move money via different banks after filling in one form - can use code SAVINGS100 to get £100 cashback if saving £10,000+ with any bank on its platform. Rates are changing rapidly right now, but its current top 1yr fix is 4.32%* and top easy-access is 4.25%* (you get the bank's savings safety protection, not Raisin's). Save £100s a year with special discounts from free loyalty schemes. If you shop at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons or Lidl, and you're happy to share your shopping habits with them, you can unlock weekly deals only available through their loyalty schemes. Eg, this week we've seen £1.50 for 10 Birds Eye omega 3 fish fingers via Nectar (next cheapest £3), £2.50 for 24 Weetabix via Morrisons More (next cheapest £3) and £5 for 5kg of Mai Thai jasmine rice via Clubcard (next cheapest £6).
