Texas Takeover: Several Longhorn swimmers posted the top time in the nation over the weekend at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational, while NC State had some strong performances over at the Janice Hope Dowd Invite at UNC, and Wolfpack grad Coleman Stewart added some historically fast swims. Also: Arno Kamminga joins the elusive sub-2:07 club in the men's 200 breaststroke, Gretchen Walsh nears Simone Manuel's 17-18 50 free NAG, the Canadian Olympic Trials see a dramatic format overhaul due to the pandemic, and stroke 50s won't be added to the Olympics any time soon. Texas, NC State Produce 13 #1 Times At Invite Meets The Texas Longhorns produced 10 swims ranked #1 in the NCAA at the annual Hall of Fame Invite in Austin, while the NC State Wolfpack churned out three while competing at UNC. Leading the way for Texas was freshman Anna Elendt, who claimed the nation's top time in both the women's 100 and 200 breaststroke. Elendt, a native of Germany, clocked 58.06 in the 100 breast to overtake Tennessee's Mona McSharry (58.28), while her 2:06.04 in the 200 eclipsed Georgia's Zoie Hartman (2:06.34). Both swims also marked new Texas program records. Also grabbing top times individually for Texas were Daniel Krueger in the men's 100 freestyle (41.48), Drew Kibler in the men's 200 free (1:30.57), Sam Pomajevich in the men's 200 fly (1:39.19), and Olivia Bray in the women's 200 fly (1:52.85). The Longhorns also moved to #1 in the men's 800 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relays, along with the women's 400 medley relay. The men's 800 free relay showing of 6:07.34 was also the fastest-ever outside of NCAAs. At the Janice Dowd Hope Invitational, NC State's Katharine Berkoff took over the top time in the nation in the women's 100 back, clocking 50.40. The Wolfpack women also posted the fastest time in the NCAA in the 200 and 800 free relays. In addition to the collegiate highlights, there were a few post-grad athletes in action at UNC, including Coleman Stewart and Michael Chadwick. Stewart notably became the 2nd-fastest performer all-time with a 43.62 swim in the men's 100 backstroke, .13 outside of Ryan Murphy's American Record of 43.49. Kamminga's 2:06.85 Highlights Dutch Qualifying Meet The 2020 Rotterdam Qualification Meet in the Netherlands featured several European athletes looking to hit Olympic qualifying standards, and several did just that, along with multiple national records going down. The biggest jaw-dropping performance came from Dutch native Arno Kamminga, who blasted a new national record in the men's 200 breaststroke in 2:06.85, becoming just the fourth man sub-2:07 in history. (Continuing with the 2020 theme of incredibly elite 200 breast swims, former world record holder and the first man sub-2:07, Ippei Watanabe, hit a 2:07.08 to close the Japan Swim in Tokyo.) Kamminga also reset the record in the 50 breast (26.88), and Thom De Boer established a new standard in the men's 50 freestyle (21.74). Four more Dutch Records went down on the women's side: two from Kira Toussaint and two from Tes Schouten. Toussaint, who lowered the SCM 50 backstroke world record during the ISL season, knocked off the long course marks in the women's 50 (27.37) and 100 back (58.91), while Schouten set new standards in the 100 (1:06.92) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.95). The meet also saw NC State bound Noe Ponti reset Swiss Records in the men's 100 (51.15) and 200 butterfly (1:56.48), and Lisa Mamie did likewise in the women's 50 breast (31.20). https://swimswam.com/kamminga-joins-exclusive-club-with-206-86-200breaststroke/ Gretchen Walsh Nears Manuel's 17-18 50 Free NAG Gretchen Walsh threw down three lifetime bests at the Music City Invite over the weekend, including a 21.41 50 freestyle to come within less than a tenth of Simone Manuel's 17-18 National Age Group Record set in 2015 (21.32). Walsh, 17, moves up from fourth to second all-time in the age group, overtaking Torri Huske (21.43) and Abbey Weitzeil (21.49). Previously, Walsh's best time stood at 21.50. Walsh also hit bests in the 100 back (51.50) and 100 fly (51.73). https://swimswam.com/gretchen-walsh-moves-to-2-all-time-for-17-18s-with-21-41-in-50-yard-free/ Canadian Trials Will Feature Timed Finals, Limited Field The Canadian Olympic Trials will see a dramatic shift in format due to the pandemic, Swimming Canada announced Monday, as the meet will now have timed finals and a maximum of 20 athletes per event. “Today we announce some key decisions for 2021, based on the best information we have available,” said High Performance Director John Atkinson. “In this global COVID-19 pandemic, we have to make health and safety the priority, along with allowing for the best possible performance from our athletes who will be invited to the Trials.” The first round of invites for the meet will be sent out Jan. 6.
