Sun Yang Continues Comeback: Three-time Olympic medalist Sun Yang will be in action this week at the Chinese National Championships, though the 33-year-old won't be eligible to qualify for China's World Championship team.

Also: Matt Fallon won't race this summer, Jordan Crooks takes a break from competing, and schools will be given the option to grandfather in roster limits in House settlement revision.

Sun Yang Entered At Chinese Nationals, Yang Junxuan Not In Field

Sun Yang, the most dominant male freestyler of the 2010s, will continue his comeback to racing as he's slated to race at the Chinese National Championships beginning this Saturday in Shenzhen, with the competition serving as China's sole qualifying opportunity for the 2025 World Championships.

Sun, however, won't be eligible to qualify for the Worlds team (or any other National Team) according to Chinese swim bloggers, who point to a document that appears to bar any swimmer who has served more than a one-year doping suspension from those teams.

The 33-year-old is coming off serving a four-year suspension for an anti-doping rule violation, which ended last May, and he's raced twice since then, including posting a notable 3:47.94 400 free earlier this year.

On the women’s side, notably absent from the entry lists is Yang Junxuan, a six-time Olympic relay medalist and the 2022 world champion in the 200 free. She was also 5th in the 200 free and 6th in the 100 free at the Paris Olympics last summer.

Zhang Yufei, who won six Olympic medals last summer including a pair of bronzes in the women's butterfly events, has notably opted not to enter the 200 fly, leaving her out of World Championship contention in that event.

Matt Fallon To Skip 2025 Summer Championship Meets

Top American breaststroker Matt Fallon will skip the 2025 U.S. National Championships and therefore be out of contention for the World Championships as he pursues an internship.

“Many thanks to my coaches (Mike, Andrew and Maddie) and of course all of my teammates at Penn who made last season so successful,” Fallon said in an Instagram post on Monday. “For this summer I’ve decided to step away from major national competitions as I pursue an internship. I plan to continue to train throughout the summer.”

Fallon told SwimSwam that the internship will be in software engineering for a startup company in New York City.

The 22-year-old is coming off his senior year at the University of Pennsylvania, finishing as the runner-up in the 200 breaststroke at the Men's NCAA Championships for the second straight year.

In the long course pool, Fallon has established himself as one of the best 200 breaststrokers in the world over the last two years, winning bronze in the event at the 2023 World Championships before breaking the American Record (2:06.54) at last summer's U.S. Olympic Trials before placing 10th in Paris.

In addition to missing out on a chance to qualify for the 2025 World Championships, Fallon's absence at Nationals also rules him out of the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, as USA Swimming will select that team this summer as well.

In 2022, Fallon skipped the U.S. International Team Trials due to a conflict with his final exams.

Jordan Crooks Taking Break From Competitive Swimming

Coming off a record-breaking NCAA career at Tennessee, Jordan Crooks has announced he's taking a break from competitive swimming.

Crooks, 23, stopped short of calling it a retirement, but said he'll step away from competition and focus on school in the immediate future.

“Thank you to the Cayman Islands, the University of Tennessee, family, and friends who’ve supported this swimming journey," he wrote on Instagram. "For now, I’ll be stepping away from competing. Looking forward to exploring all that life has to offer. Till we meet again."

Crooks alluded to this competitive break during an interview with SwimSwam in early April.

“For now, I’m just going to take a step back and focus on school and just live in the NARP (non-athletic regular person) life and relax for a little bit," he said. "Get the body and the mind right, and we’ll see what the future holds. No idea what it does hold for now, but just kind of enjoying basking in what we’ve been able to accomplish this year and being super grateful for our four years at Tennessee. Wouldn’t have wanted to do it anywhere else, and we’ll see where life takes me soon.”

Crooks was a 2024 Olympic finalist for the Cayman Islands in the men's 50 free, placing 8th, and he also finished 13th in the 100 free last summer in Paris. His big breakthrough on the international stage came at the 2022 Short Course World Championships, when he won gold in the 50 free. He successfully defended that title in 2024, and also broke Caeleb Dressel's world record in the semi-finals, becoming the first man in history under 20 seconds in the SCM pool (19.90).

Collegiately, Crooks was a two-time NCAA champion in the 50 free in 2023 and 2025, and he also won national titles as a member of Tennessee's 200 and 400 free relays last season. At the 2025 NCAAs, he also broke Dressel's NCAA and U.S. Open Record in the 100 free, clocking 39.83 in the prelims before placing 2nd in the final.

Roster Limits Addressed In House Settlement With Grandfathering Option

A revision to the NCAA v. House settlement will give schools the option of grandfathering in roster limits after Judge Claudia Wilken called on attorneys to make changes to the terms.

Wilken delayed final approval of the case over the proposed roster limits, calling on attorneys to add a grandfathering clause “so that members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement Class will not be harmed by the immediate implementation of the roster limits provision.”

Plaintiffs in the case have requested grandfather protection for all athletes who lost spots because of roster limits. This will act as a safeguard for current student-athletes, allowing them to continue to operate under the old set of rules (with larger rosters) while they finish out their career. However, several athletes have already transferred from their previous schools, believing the new roster limit rules would apply to them.

It's important to note that the grandfathering clause will be optional, not mandatory, for each school to implement.

Last week, Notre Dame became the first school to publicly commit to opting into the grandfathering clause.
