Cal Men Make Two Big Adds For Spring Semester: The Cal men's team has made a pair of significant additions to their roster for the second semester, bringing in Olympians Lucas Henveaux and Mewen Tomac as they take a run at another NCAA title in March. Also: Jordan Windle is permanently suspended by SafeSport, Summer McIntosh heads to altitude and the U.S. House passes a bill that would bar trans athletes from female school sports. Golden Bears Load Up With Tomac, Henveaux For NCAA Title Run Though most have leaned toward Texas and Indiana as the favorites for the men's NCAA title this season, Cal has put itself firmly in the mix after reloading with a pair of European Olympians for the second semester. The Bears brought in Frenchman Mewen Tomac and Belgian Lucas Henveaux for their dual meet against USC on Friday, a surprise of sorts as neither swimmer was announced to be joining the roster until the beginning of the meet. Tomac, 23, committed to Cal just over one year ago, and was initially scheduled to join the team in the fall before delaying his arrival by one semester. Henveaux, 24, competed for Cal as a fifth-year graduate student during the 2022-23 season, but has seemingly found another season of eligibility in order to compete for the Bears in 2025. The women's team added Camille Henveaux, Lucas' younger sister, earlier in the week. Both Tomac and Henveaux won individual bronze medals at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, with Tomac taking 3rd in the men's 200 back and Henveaux doing so in the 200 free. Both swimmers represented their country at the Olympics last summer in Paris, with Tomac finishing 4th in the 200 back and 15th in the 100 back, and Henveaux finishing as high as 11th in the 200 free. In related news, Olympic gold medalist Daniel Wiffen told SwimSwam he's considering joining the Bears next season, having recently concluded a training visit to Berkeley alongside his twin brother Nathan, who committed to Cal a few months ago. U.S. Olympic Diver Jordan Windle Permanently Suspended By SafeSport More than three years after his initial suspension, former Olympian and University of Texas diver Jordan Windle has been permanently banned by the U.S. Center for SafeSport. Windle, 26, is now listed as "permanently ineligible" in the SafeSport disciplinary database after he was previously entered with a temporary suspension. In 2021, Windle was suspended on Allegations of Misconduct. While neither the FBI and SafeSport would not provide details on the open investigation at the time, multiple sources told SwimSwam at the time that Windle was under investigation for allegedly exchanging nude photographs with at least one minor athlete who is also a member of USA Diving. The ban describes his misconduct as follows: - Sexual Misconduct – involving Minors; Inappropriate Conduct; Emotional Misconduct
Windle was the 2019 NCAA champion in the men's platform diving event, and then won the 2021 national title on 1-meter while at Texas. He then represented the U.S. at the Olympics in 2021, placing 9th in the men's 10-meter platform event. Read more here. Summer McIntosh Training At Altitude With Fred Vergnoux Three-time Olympic champion Summer McIntosh is switching up her training early in the year after a wildly successful 2024, heading to France to train at altitude. McIntosh is currently on a three-week training camp in Font-Romeu, the hub of France's Altitude Training Centre. The 18-year-old is training with French coach Fred Vergnoux and his CN d'Antibes squad, which includes the likes of French distance freestyler and open water standout Marc-Antoine Olivier. CN d’Antibes primarily trains at the World Aquatics Training Centre in Antibes, a pool opened in 2023 by World Aquatics in collaboration with the French Swimming Federation and the club. Antibes is about a five-hour drive west of Font Romeu. McIntosh is coming off a dominant year in the pool, winning three Olympic gold medals and adding a silver in Paris, and following up with a five-medal haul at the Short Course World Championships in December, highlighted by three world records. House Passes Bill That Would Bar Trans Athletes From Female Sports At Schools The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation that aims to bar transgender women and girls from participating in female athletic programs in schools last week. The “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act" was passed in a divided vote, almost entirely on party lines, 218 to 206. The New York Times reported that just two Democrats joined all Republicans in voting in favor of the bill, while another Democrat simply voted “present,” declining to take a position. The bill would prohibit federal funding from going to K-12 schools that include transgender students on women’s sports teams. It seeks to amend federal law to require that “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth,” to determine compliance with Title IX in athletics, according to the legislative text. Although the House passed it, the bill still needs to be approved by the Senate, which figures to be an uphill battle. The Republicans would need seven Democrats to join them in voting in favor of it. Read more here.
