Last night, Scarlett Johansson hosted the season finale of Saturday Night Live season 50—appearing alongside husband and Weekend Update host, Colin Jost, and welcoming musical guest Bad Bunny to the stage. Next week, the actor’s directorial debut, Eleanor The Great, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. So, when Sally Singer interviewed Johansson for Vogue in 2004, describing the then 19-year-old as maturing “from child actress to full-fledged star” following her critically acclaimed turn in Lost in Translation, it was a keen foreshadowing of the career that would unfold.
In the years since Singer and Johansson spent an afternoon together at Soho House in downtown Manhattan, the actor has amassed dozens more film credits, been nominated for two Academy Awards, and walked the Cannes red carpet many, many times. With the film festival announcing a new dress code for 2025 (just a day before it kicked off) more eyes than ever are on the celebrity looks. Perhaps Johansson will channel the same approach to red carpet dressing she shared with Vogue back in 2004. “I want my dress to be the most beautiful dress in the entire world,” she told Singer, “and I want everyone to want it in various colors.”
