What Happened in Paris
On Saturday, May 28th, the UEFA Champions League Final was postponed by 37 minutes. Liverpool fans were struggling to enter the stadium for an unknown reason. Later, they would struggle to leave it as well.
There’s a lot of moving parts and nuance to this story, and not all of the details have come to light just yet. But the following should give you a rundown of events. Checking the links and source material can provide you with a fuller image of the story.
There was no scanning machine validating supporters with electronic tickets
Many – including a verified French Journalist and Andy Robertson’s own family – were accused of having false tickets, leading to slower lines
Those trying to exit the large queue of Liverpool fans were not allowed to do so by police
Poorly parked police vans, closed entrance points and a lack of communication with supporters created pressure in the large crowd, and fear amongst those within
The Liverpool fans you see hopping fences on social media aren’t doing so out of rebelliousness to illegally enter the stadium – they’re doing so out of fear to escape a possible crush
With choked entry points, a buildup of frustrated and confused fans, and even local hooliganism causing more confusion, police resorted to physical intervention and tear gas
After the game, local hooligans attacked departing Liverpool fans, sending some to the hospital and stealing their belongings, while the police failed to properly assist
Think of it as “their Premier League moment,” a step that could see the financial shackles lifted from them and allow them to even out the money discrepancy throughout the league and set them on closer footing to Europe’s elite.
The proposed league is called Liga do Futebol Brasileiro — Libra for short
