I've been talking a lot lately about how to not give up and how to stay motivated to strive toward your goals.
So it may come as a surprise if I say that quitting... sometimes quitting can not only be a good thing, but a necessary thing.
Telling you to quit seems like a pretty negative thing to say, doesn't it? But hear me out.
Just saying "never give up" without digging deeper can give you a one-sided view of the picture. There's a principle that I always try to remember when I have a new goal in mind.
It's this:
To gain one thing, you've got to let go of something else.
Sometimes it's letting go of your time to gain a new skill. Sometimes it's letting go of a relationship so that you can start nurturing another. Or it can be letting go of a habit to make room for a new one.
The fact is, you can't hold on to everything.
That means that quitting or giving up - it can be positive. It's positive if you give up on the right things.
In fact, giving up something can be the first and most important step to help you finally succeed.
So the idea of "not giving up" doesn't apply to everything.
It means not giving up on the important things - the things that really matter. The things that align with your direction in life.
How can you know if you should persevere with something or give it up? Read this article I wrote to find out.
