Hey there, EmailTuna!

Last week I shared that we’ll be starting to grow our own food in the new community garden, and this week we’re talking about trees, which is perfect timing since Arbor Day is celebrated in many places tomorrow. ๐ŸŒณ

Let’s jump in.

1. Plant (or hug) a tree! ๐ŸŒณ

Arbor Day is celebrated in many states across the U.S. tomorrow and this holiday celebrates all that trees do for us. Aside from providing perches and homes to many animals and birds, trees create healthier, safer, and more connected communities. Trees clean our air, filter our water, and even help with storms and flooding in our cities. Trees also provide shade and can cool our cities by up to 10 degrees! ๐Ÿฅต

Each Arbor Day we're encouraged to plant a tree. And if you're looking for fun ways to engage your kids with the great outdoors, check out these 150 ways to celebrate trees from the Arbor Day Foundation. You can also propagate a tree and start your own sapling... kids love seeing this process unfold!

2. Take a bath… forest bathing, that is! ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ›€

Speaking of trees, don't you feel better when you go for a forest walk? The term “forest bathing” was created by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. The original Japanese phrase ไธ€  shinrin-yoku ไธ€ translates as “absorbing the forest atmosphere.” When you spend time in nature you'll reap these rewards:

๐Ÿฆ  Creating kung fu fighting killer cells.
โค๏ธ Decreased risk of heart attack.
๐Ÿ‘ Protection against obesity and diabetes.
๐Ÿƒ‍โ™€๏ธ More energy and better sleep.
๐Ÿ˜ƒ Mood-boosting effects.
๐Ÿง˜‍โ™€๏ธ Decreased inflammation.
๐Ÿ‘ Clearer, more comfortable skin.
๐Ÿ’ช Soothing relief for sore muscles.

Here's an article on How to Do Forest Bathing.

Bonus: forest bathing can help you reach your 1,000 hours outside challenge if you’re participating!

3. Get your brain boost ๐Ÿง

Spending time outside in nature is incredibly good for your kids, but that’s not the only way to boost brain health. The omega 3s in fish oil can help support reading and math skills, improve sleep, and help support children with ADHD and depression. Early exposure can even help reduce the risk of allergies in kids.

I’ve shared before about how much I love cod liver oil, but I know some kids just can’t handle the taste. ๐ŸŸ

I discovered Nordic Naturals Children’s DHA that are available in small beads. Older kids can swallow the beads, but younger children can also chew them. They have a pleasant strawberry(ish) taste without any fishy aftertaste. The bead part is a little chewy, but not still much more tolerable than regular cod liver oil.
