“In Vogue: The 90s” (available from 13 September on Hulu and Disney+) explores the impact of Gianni Versace’s work—joyous color, S-E-X, and the marriage of fashion and pop-culture—as well as the tragedy of his death in July 1997. Prior to the opening of the Costume Institute’s “Gianni Versace” show, Hamish Bowles wrote a moving piece about the man and that exhibition, which included the designer’s fashion and costume designs. “Gianni Versace traded in dreams,” Bowles wrote of the designer who had a passion for fashion, theater, and dance, but above all, family and life.

On September 20, 1973, 90 million people turned on their television to watch the “Battle of the Sexes,” a tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, a one-time number 1-ranked tennis player and chauvinist who claimed women were inferior players. King proved him wrong, winning straight sets: 6–4, 6–3, 6–3, and the $100,000 prize.
