It’s go day—the official kickoff of New York Fashion Week. I hope all the out-of-towners brought their waterproof boots, because it might be a soggy one. It’s become a tradition in these parts for Laird Borrelli-Persson to begin the season with a look back at the runways of 20 years ago. I love these photo essays of Laird’s; they trigger such powerful memories. My first-ever eBay purchase was a white dress from Olivier Theyskens’s ravishing fall 2005 show for Rochas (look 42, for anyone who’s curious). I guess I was a late adopter, Google tells me eBay launched in 1995. Alas, the dress was a size too big, so I didn’t wind up wearing it to my wedding. That collection of Olivier’s truly stands the test of time, but there are other beauties too, among them early Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent and an iconic Nicolas Ghesquière outing for Balenciaga (the rare time he showed in New York).
