Endless articles have been written about the newish red carpet phenomenon of men in brooches, enumerating all the ways they enliven a tuxedo. But not much has been said about what they can do for a woman’s wardrobe. With apologies to the late Madeleine Albright, who chose her lapel pin based on the world leader she was meeting with, I have to admit I’ve always thought of brooches as a bit mumsy. That is until I wore Elie Top’s Valmont brooch to a Paris dinner in March. Nothing mumsy in the slightest about its old mine-cut diamond drops set on a lace of distressed silver. Though it was a loan, returned the next morning, it made me rethink brooches. Julie de Libran’s colorful Murano glass pin did indeed enliven the vintage Levi’s jean jacket I wore over my little black Sea New York dress at another recent party. If, however, you still need convincing, in her latest Addressed column Laia Garcia-Furtado will show you how to wear a brooch without looking like a grandma. |
