Anna Sui has gotten the Barbie treatment. With the new doll arriving in stores for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, the New York designer spoke to Laird Borrelli-Persson about the role Barbie played not only in her youthful interest in fashion but also in her personal wardrobe. When she landed in New York to go to Parsons, she carried a portfolio. “And it was similar to Barbie’s,” Sui says, “because in my mind, that’s what a designer had.” Sui’s work is currently the subject of an exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum. Elsewhere on the subject of dolls, Vogue Business’s Lucy Maguire has unpacked our collective fascination with toy bag charms. |
