Ciao from Roma, where Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda clients have gathered for five evenings of festivities, including tonight’s Alta Moda women’s show at the Forum. Yes, the Forum—a first, in my experience, though the Italian capital has been the setting for some epic shows over the years, including this one from the days when Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were still a duo at Valentino, and this Fendi outing from Karl Lagerfeld, where the models walked on water—Trevi Fountain water.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana kicked things off with a party on the Via Veneto complete with a Cher performance—yes, Cher—and an exhibition of black-and-white paparazzi photographs from Rome’s 1950s and ’60s heyday, most of which have apparently never before been seen. Monica Vitti, Sophia Loren, Michelangelo Mastroianni, Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday—they’re all here. To see them together, said curator Edoardo Dionea Ciccioni, who himself looks rather like an Italian screen idol of the era, “is to reconstruct a dream: that of a past still unaware of the legend it was becoming.” |
