You may not be surprised to learn that when Lady Gaga’s name was first mentioned in Vogue, in October 2009, it was in an article titled “No Fear Nails” by Sally Singer. Two months later, our readers would see Gaga’s fearlessness on full display for the first time, in one of Annie Leibovitz and Grace Coddington’s fairy-tale fantasies, in which she gamely played the witch in a re-creation of “Hansel and Gretel” starring Andrew Garfield and Lily Cole in the titular roles. Lady Gaga’s witch, seen first fattening up her victims and then being trapped in the furnace—never forget how gnarly the Brothers Grimm really were—wore Marc Jacobs throughout, with a wig by Julien d’Ys. The first words in an accompanying profile of Gaga by Hamish Bowles are: “‘I’ve always been an outspoken and extreme dresser,’ pronounces Lady Gaga.” You don’t say.
On the occasion of her unforgettable performance Friday night at Coachella—not since 2018’s Beychella has Indio been so relevant—we revisit Lady Gaga’s Vogue debut. |
