Kyoto’s Toji Temple was the transporting setting for Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior pre-fall show. In keeping with the custom Chiuri has established at Dior, the destination collection was made in collaboration with local artisans, including master dyers and embroiderers working in their own historical traditions. Chiuri also made a close study of the kimono, noting how it differs from Western styles (including Monsieur Dior’s). “It’s the body that defines the shape of the kimono,” she told Vogue Runway’s Tiziana Cardini. “In Western fashion, it’s often the opposite—the body is expected to conform to the garment.” Seen up close, Cardini pointed out, the collection’s “craftsmanship was nothing short of couture.” See all the photos from the show. |
