| We’ve learned a lot more about Apple’s 2025 and 2026 Mac releases this week, thanks to details shared exclusively with AppleInsider. Rumors about the iPhone 17 and iPhone Fold continue to surface, and there have also been claims about future Apple headsets. President Trump, meanwhile, has announced a new trade deal with Vietnam that sees Apple paying five times more in tariffs.
Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters. |

| | | | This week, AppleInsider exclusively revealed 15 device identifiers that correspond to unreleased Mac models. Based on what we were told, Apple plans to introduce the M5 chip with the MacBook Pro in late 2025, after which it will gradually expand to more devices like the MacBook Air.
Our findings suggest that we’ll see a redesigned MacBook Pro in 2026, and a recent report indicates it will have a Samsung OLED display. Also among the identifiers we discovered was the mysterious J700, which could be the low-cost MacBook with an A18 Pro chip, which surfaced in a separate report this week.
Our take: Apple’s 2025 Mac lineup will mostly consist of spec upgrades, while meaningful design changes are expected to debut with the 2026 M6 MacBook Pro. It remains unclear exactly what the J700 is, however, and whether or not Apple will move forward with it.

| | | | | Apple reportedly has a working prototype of its foldable iPhone, according to a report this week. It’s expected to debut a year after the iPhone 17 Pro, which could have the Apple logo and its MagSafe coil positioned slightly lower due to the new camera bump.
Separately, Apple is also said to be working on a successor to the Apple Vision Pro, which is set to debut by the end of 2025. An Apple patent published this week suggests future headsets might feature a software trick to protect users from motion sickness. The company’s smart glasses, meanwhile, are once again rumored to debut in 2027.
Our take: People familiar with Apple’s hardware efforts have told AppleInsider that the company has been researching foldable iPhones since at least 2023, and multiple rumors suggest a 2026 release for the device. The design changes of the iPhone 17 Pro are an obvious choice, but it remains to be seen how the Apple Vision Pro lineup will evolve.

| | | | | President Trump’s latest trade agreement has resulted in a 20% tariff on goods imported from Vietnam, where Apple makes some of its iPads, Macs, AirPods, and Apple Watch models. Apple supplier Foxconn, meanwhile, has reportedly instructed its Chinese workers to leave India and return to China, possibly under pressure from officials.
As for Apple’s AI endeavors, one of the company’s most senior large language model researchers has left after 8 years. Colleagues reportedly said his expertise is tough to replace, as rival companies offer multimillion-dollar pay packages to poach talent. Apple is reportedly turning towards OpenAI and Anthropic in the hopes that their technology will one day power Siri, as confidence in in-house models dwindles.
Our take: Despite Trump’s claims that Vietnam will pay the tariffs, Apple will now have to pay at least five times more in import-related costs. Foxconn's output of iPhones from India may be reduced due to the employees’ return to China. Siri, meanwhile, has faced major delays, and a third-party solution could prove useful.
