This Week in Apple

The M5 MacBook Pro could debut a few months later than initially anticipated, while the M4 chip might make its way to the Apple Vision Pro. We’ve also heard more about the iPhone 17 range, with two leaks detailing the color options Apple has supposedly been testing. Apple itself has faced some leadership changes, with COO Jeff Williams set to retire in 2025, while the head of the company’s Foundational Models team has been poached by Meta.

Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters.

The long-rumored successor to the Apple Vision Pro might end up using Apple’s M4 chip rather than the M5 chip we had previously expected to see in the device. The current-gen M4 chip was first introduced in 2024 and is available across Apple’s Mac and iPad product lineups.

The M5 is reportedly still on track to debut in 2025, however, as a spec upgrade to the iPad Pro. The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, meanwhile, are now expected to receive the next-generation processing hardware in early 2026, as the same source claims Apple has delayed the MacBook Pro, though it’s not clear why.

Our take:

AppleInsider has independently confirmed that Apple is working on multiple M5-based Macs, including a new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It’s possible that Apple delayed the M5 MacBook Pro to secure additional development time for the redesigned M6 model. It remains to be seen whether or not the Apple Vision Pro will use the M4 or M5 chip, however.

Over the years, Apple upgraded the Finder with a multitude of useful upgrades and productivity-enhancing features, but many of them are often overlooked. Check out this week’s newsletter-exclusive guide to find out exactly what they are and where you can find them within the Finder!

Two separate leakers have provided alleged details about the color options we could see with the iPhone 17 range. The iPhone 17 Air might be available in black, light blue, light gold, and silver. The standard iPhone 17, meanwhile, may be offered in black, blue, green, purple, and silver, judging by leaked accessory images.

We’ve also seen more claims about the hardware of the iPhone 17 lineup, with one leaker saying the device will use a binned variant of the A19 Pro. This goes against previous rumors, however. BOE, meanwhile, is set to produce displays for the iPhone 17 Pro, while another report suggests Samsung will do the same for the iPhone Fold. We may even get an iPhone 17e in 2026, according to a separate rumor.

Our take:

Though not always accurate, accessories are typically a good indicator of the colors Apple plans to debut with each iPhone generation. There’s also an overlap between the two leaks, which is another good sign we’ll see blue, silver, and black color options with the iPhone 17 range.

This week, Meta managed to snipe the head of Apple’s foundational models team through a reported $200M pay package. The iPhone maker is experiencing additional leadership changes, with COO Jeff Williams set to retire later this year.

Apple has also reportedly acquired two AI firms, which may have led to the improved Apple Vision Pro avatars we saw with visionOS 26. The company also appears to be working on an AI-based assistant for its Apple Support app. OpenAI, meanwhile, has completed its acquisition of io Products, the AI hardware design firm led by former Apple designer Jony Ive.

Our take:

Apple Intelligence hasn’t received any meaningful updates so far, even with the debut of iOS 26. The departure of a top AI executive will likely only add fuel to the fire, and it remains to be seen how Apple will handle future AI-related features. The company’s research papers show some promising ideas, despite less than favorable circumstances.

The U.S. Attorney General has publicly threatened he developer of an iPhone app for sharing sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. "We are looking at him," said Attorney General Pam Bondi, "and he better watch out."

As for Apple’s legal battles, the company has filed an appeal against the $570M fine imposed by the European Union. In the United States, the company is urging a court to undo a trade decision that blocked imports of the Apple Watch because of the blood-oxygen sensor implementation, claiming it unfairly impacted millions of users.

Our take:

There is no apparent legal basis for the U.S Attorney General’s threat, and it appears to be an entirely unconstitutional attack against free speech. The EU, meanwhile, has yet to comment publicly on Apple’s appeal. It also remains to be seen how the blood-oxygen sensor dispute will be resolved.

The M1 Ultra Mac Studio is already three years old, and for the "time is money" crowd, it might be time to update. The M4 Max variant of the 2025 Mac Studio is an interesting option, but is it worth buying, given the lower number of GPU and CPU cores?
