| Apple has announced plans for a $100 billion investment to enhance the company's manufacturing facilities in the United States. The investment focuses on existing supply chain partners and has little to do with iPhone manufacturing. It did help Apple secure a semiconductor tariff exemption, though. The iPhone 18 Pro might be the first iPhone to get a display made in America, and we’ve heard more about the iPhone 17 range as well as future Apple Vision Pro models.
Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters. |

| | | | This week, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the company would be investing an additional $100B in U.S. manufacturing efforts. The iPhone maker will invest $600B over the next four years. This will enhance the company's manufacturing facilities in the United States, but there are no new companies named, nor any efforts to move full device assembly to the US.
The investment, which has almost nothing to do with iPhone manufacturing, secured Apple an exemption from Trump’s 100% semiconductor tariff. Apple doesn't import many semiconductors outside of finished goods, so it's not clear what impact the exemption will have. Tim Cook also presented a piece of Gorilla Glass and a golden stand to President Donald Trump to commemorate the news.
Our take: Apple has been playing the appeasement game with the current US administration as a part of CEO Tim Cook's playbook for dealing with Donald Trump. So far, it's worked, as donations, in-person dinners, events, and an even bigger investment may lead to tariff exemptions.

| | | | | Newly published patents and patent applications show that Apple has been exploring ways of getting the Apple Vision Pro to track breathing as part of health monitoring. A future Apple headset might also gain the ability to determine mouth movements to take commands.
Another patent details how AirPods could vibrate your head when you type on Apple Vision Pro. The iPhone 17 range, expected to debut on September 9, could get new “Liquid Silicone” cases, if a sketchy rumor is to be believed. Images purporting to show the iPhone 17 Air battery were also published this week. 2026, meanwhile, could see the debut of an OLED-equipped MacBook Pro and an iPhone 18 with a U.S.-made display.
Our take: The Apple Vision Pro is far from a mass-market product, but the addition of new health and input-related features could serve as a good selling point. The iPhone 17 line, meanwhile, is just over a month away, so hardware leaks aren’t entirely unexpected.

| | | | | The fifth developer beta of iOS 25 brings new options for the Camera and Mail apps, but it also appears to have leaked a key Apple Watch detail. An image within the operating system suggests the Apple Watch Ultra 3 may have an almost imperceptibly larger display than the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
macOS Sonoma and macOS Sequoia, meanwhile, have received release candidate builds for a future bug fix update. The jump straight to release candidate status likely means Apple is fast-tracking the updates to patch critical vulnerabilities. Once the updates are out, Apple will likely provide details about what is being patched then.
Our take: Overall, the fifth developer beta of iOS 26 delivers a few useful enhancements, but nothing groundbreaking. The release candidate status of the macOS Sonoma and Sequoia updates means Apple could release both of them by August 15 or so.
