Over the last 18 months, the subreddit “Am I the Asshole?” has turned into an essential destination for people looking to crowdsource moral judgment. It’s the go-to place to find out if you’re in the wrong, to tell somebody else they’re in the wrong, or, better yet, to sit back and watch the sparks fly.
After talking with the subreddit’s creator, some power users, and experts on ethics and philosophy, however, I realized it’s more than the sum of its parts: AITA is a civil oasis in a divided society, and an indirect reflection of how we live now.
