We have electric cars, electric trains, and electric bikes. So why not electric boats? That’s the premise behind the Arc One, the $300,000 electric luxury-cruiser speedboat that is attempting to redefine what a boat can be. Cruising at speeds reaching 40mph for up to five hours on the water, the Arc One received a lot of attention when it was announced earlier this year, thanks largely to $35 million from investors, including Will Smith, Kevin Durant, and Sean Combs. But aside from a few neat stats, the company has been highly secretive about the design of its watershed boat. Until now, that is.

In an exclusive interview, Arc Boats cofounder and CTO Ryan Cook walked me through the unique design of the company’s first boat. As a former lead engineer at SpaceX, Cook drew many parallels between building rockets and watercraft, while explaining some of the nitty-gritty challenges, and advantages, of building an electric vehicle for the water. It’s a cool story, so don’t miss it. Read my article here.

Stagflation might be coming: What is that, anyway?
A new warning from the World Bank says that the global economy may be on the brink of a brutal combination of high prices and low economic growth, commonly referred to as “stagflation.”
“Compounding the damage from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has magnified the slowdown in the global economy, which is entering what could become a protracted period of feeble growth and elevated inflation,” reads a World Bank brief.
Stagflation occurs when economic growth slows, and prices continue to increase. The word “stagflation” itself is a combination of “stagnation” and “inflation.” In effect, it’s a worst-case scenario for the Federal Reserve.
We haven’t seen stagflation in any notable form in roughly 50 years. During the 1970s, the average inflation rate was 6.85%, and unemployment was over 6% for much of the decade.
