Good morning!
Silicon Valley billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook VP, struck a nerve (and created a media firestorm) when he said last year that social media is "ripping apart the social fabric of how society works." Facebook issued a scolding rebuttal, but many others cheered: Here, at last, was a tech executive willing to be honest about his "tremendous guilt" and Silicon Valley's moral obligations.
What Palihapitiya's newfound fans may not realize is that he is more than just a provocateur. Through Social Capital, the venture capital firm he cofounded, Palihapitiya is putting money behind his words. Already, Social Capital has made big bets on startups in fields like diabetes, education, and space. At the same time, the firm hopes to make the venture industry more equitable by automating many of its investment decisions.
I had a chance to get to know Palihapitiya over a few days last December. I learned what he values and how he makes decisions. I also heard about his professional-caliber poker skills, and a pretty epic tattoo. Read my feature and come along for the ride in his Tesla Model X. —Ainsley Harris | | Did someone forward you this email? Subscribe here! | | | | | |
