AVOIDING BAGGAGE FEES |
I can't remember the last time I paid a baggage fee when flying a U.S. airline.
And it's not because I limit myself to just a personal item or carry-on bag. Instead, I travel with a daypack and a 70-liter Osprey Farpoint backpack that is too big to carry on.
I avoid baggage fees when flying most Oneworld airlines (like American and Alaska) and Star Alliance airlines (like United) thanks to my elite status with American and Asiana.
But even without elite status, credit cards can get you free checked bags and preferred boarding. The details vary by card, though, so read the fine print. Some cards require you to pay with the card to get the baggage allowance, while others only allow complimentary checked baggage on select routes.
If you tend to check bags, check out the following stories: Finally, remember that the Southwest baggage policy is extremely friendly, allowing all passengers to check up to two bags and bring both a personal item and a carry-on on board for no extra charge. So, if you want to travel with a lot of luggage and don't get baggage benefits via elite status or a credit card, Southwest may be a good option. |
