AMTRAK’S COMEBACK |
Train travel in the U.S. has always paled in comparison to countries in Europe and Asia. The trains here are generally dated and slow. However, Amtrak is working to change that.
In February, Amtrak began rolling out its new Venture fleet in the Midwest, which will eventually replace 40% of its entire fleet. Then, last week, I was invited to preview the brand-new high-speed Acela trains, which will enter service in the Northeast Corridor in the fall of 2023.
Overall, the new interiors are much brighter and more modern, with amenities like faster Wi-Fi, plus power outlets and USB ports at every seat. Seats will also be more private thanks to winged headrests, though recline will be basically nonexistent. Instead, the bottom section of the seats will simply slide forward a couple of inches.
