This Week in Apple

Though we’ve heard a lot about Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, a new patent application reveals we could also have an Apple Watch with similar technology. The iPhone 17 range appears to have been finalized, as more and more leaks show the same design.

Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters.

An Apple patent application suggests foldable display technology will make its way to the Apple Watch. The company’s foldable screens will reportedly feature power efficiency and hinge design improvements, though likely at a great cost. Rumors suggest the iPhone Fold will be priced at more than $2000.

As for Apple’s AI endeavors, the iPhone maker has reportedly replaced Siri chief John Giannandrea with Mike Rockwell, the head of the Apple Vision Pro Project. The delay of Siri’s Apple Intelligence features has even sparked a lawsuit against Apple.

The takeaway:

Rumors suggest that Apple has been experimenting with foldable displays for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, meaning that a similar Apple Watch would make sense. The change in Siri leadership is likely an attempt to prevent significant feature delays from happening again.

Whether you’re a voracious reader or just a fan of a particular author, Apple Books has something for virtually everyone. Literature offers unparalleled opportunities; it’s effectively a window into the minds of others, be it that of a contemporary best-selling author or a renowned historical figure.

Through reading, you can get a glimpse of imaginary worlds and bygone eras. To do that with Apple Books, though, you’ll need to know all about its different features and capabilities. Luckily, AppleInsider has you covered with this week’s newsletter-exclusive tip. Check it out!

The iPhone 17 Pro will reportedly feature a redesigned chassis with a rectangular glass cutout on the back for MagSafe charging. The same source also shared images of an iPhone 17 Air case, which features a rear camera bar that aligns with prior claims.

Separately, a repeat rumor suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will be equipped with a 24MP front-facing camera and that it will have the same C1 modem as the iPhone 16e.

Our take:

The overall look of the iPhone 17 range has likely been finalized, as leaks continue to show the same designs. The C1 modem seems like an obvious choice for future Apple products.

Apple reportedly plans to cut the budget of the popular AppleTV+, which is allegedly losing money. At the same time, the iPhone maker started construction on new AppleTV+ studios in Los Angeles.

The MacBook Pro, meanwhile, continues to dominate the premium laptop market despite the arrival of the M4 MacBook Air. On the iPhone side of things, a recent survey claims that most iPhone users aren’t impressed with the iPhone 16e, though Apple fans may not be the target demographic.

Our take:

Apple doesn’t rely solely on the revenue from AppleTV+, so the service’s supposed losses don’t spell doom for the company. While the iPhone 16e might seem unappealing to Apple fans, it could experience success with less tech-savvy users.

Related Stories:

Though Apple has made efforts to comply with the Digital Markets Act, the European Union has unveiled a laundry list of new demands. The EU wants Apple to make its iPhone connectivity technology available to rival companies, particularly smartwatch and headphone manufacturers.

In addition, the iPhone maker recently lost an antitrust appeal in Germany, which could result in fees. In Brazil, meanwhile, courts have decided that Apple won’t have to enable third-party app marketplaces in the country, at least for the time being.

Our take:

The EU’s never-ending list of requirements could drive Apple to restrict the availability of new software features in the region, as was the case with iPhone Mirroring. The situation in Brazil has yet to reach any sort of meaningful conclusion; Apple could still be forced to enable sideloading in the future.

This week, AppleInsider’s Mike Wuerthele reviewed the 2025 iPad 11. It’s a bit of an oddball, given the lack of Apple Intelligence support on such a new product, but it retains the core functionality of an iPad. Even so, the newest products aren’t always the greatest, so we also recommend checking out Malcolm Owen’s comparison of the iPad 11 and the M1 iPad Air.
