This Week in Apple

We’re not even halfway through 2025, and we already have quite a few rumors about the special 20th anniversary iPhone, planned for 2027. The Apple Vision Pro is set to receive a few new features later this year as well, and one of them utilizes on-device eye-tracking. Apple has also given us our first glimpse of iOS 19 through its accessibility features.

Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters.

The long-rumored 20th anniversary iPhone is expected to feature significant design changes and performance improvements. According to a report published on Wednesday, the device will feature a power-efficient display with thinner bezels, as well as an under-display camera. We could also see improved RAM for AI features.

The Apple Vision Pro, meanwhile, is expected to receive a new eye-tracking feature that will let users scroll through apps, according to a separate report. Apple has also published two AI research papers this week. They show the company’s interest in photogrammetry and video-LLMs, which could see use on the visionOS platform.

Our take:

Rumors suggest that Apple will unveil a significantly improved and redesigned iPhone in 2027, much like it did with the iPhone X ten years prior. The Apple Vision Pro has been slow to receive new features, but more progress is being made on that front, it seems.

President Trump has “a little problem with Tim Cook,” as Apple supplier Foxconn has been expanding its factories in India. "We're not interested in you building in India, India can take care of themselves... we want you to build here," said the President.

As Trump criticizes Apple for Foxconn's manufacturing of the iPhone in India, the supplier has secured government approval and funding for a new semiconductor plant there. iPhone production seems to be moving away from China, and iPhone 16 sales in the country aren’t doing great either, according to two separate reports this week.

Our take:

President Trump’s latest comments seem to have escalated the tensions between the White House and Apple. The US has neither the required skilled labor nor the rare minerals needed for iPhone manufacturing, while India has both.

After a major delay spanning almost five months, CarPlay Ultra finally debuted on Thursday. Shipping initially with Aston Martin’s vehicles, its next-gen UI expands the iPhone-based layout across multiple displays on the dashboard and promises a more cohesive experience for drivers.

This week, Apple also released iOS 18.5. It includes a new Pride Harmony wallpaper, improvements for the Mail and Settings apps, as well as over 30 different security fixes. Security updates for iPadOS 17 and older versions of macOS were rolled out as well.

Our take:

iOS 18.5 is relatively light feature-wise, which makes sense given that Apple’s gearing up for the reveal of iOS 19 at WWDC 2025. CarPlay Ultra, meanwhile, was unveiled virtually out of nowhere. It’s a substantial overhaul, but one that took far too long.

macOS 16, meanwhile, is just around the corner, and it's certain to bring major updates to the Mac. While we’ll have to wait and see what Apple actually delivers, AppleInsider’s William Gallagher and Malcolm Owen have outlined the many different changes Mac users hope will be included.
