| Apple was granted a tariff exemption, seemingly thanks to CEO Tim Cook and his established relationship with Donald Trump. The next-gen Apple Vision headset, meanwhile, could be available in a familiar-looking dark blue color. More precise information about the iPhone Fold has also surfaced, indicating that significant progress has been made in its development.
Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters. |
|
| | | | Apple is reportedly developing a new Apple Vision headset, with titanium components for weight reduction and a new battery cable. The same source also suggests it will be available in a dark blue color similar to the iPhone 5.
Apple’s foldable iPhone, rumored to cost over $2000, will allegedly feature a 7.8-inch Samsung-made OLED display with a resolution of 2,713 by 1,920, allowing for 428 pixels per inch. The iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, is expected to get a 2nm processor, which could lead to a price increase.
Our take: Apple might want to make a visual distinction between its headsets, just as it did with its laptop lines. The M4 MacBook Air is available in a dark blue Midnight color option, not offered on the MacBook Pro. Two separate sources have revealed the same iPhone fold display specs, which gives some credence to the claim.

| | | | | | | Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly convinced Trump to help Apple by implementing tariff exemptions, according to a new report. President Trump already stated that he “helped Tim Cook recently.”
The tariff exemption may only be temporary, however, and the US plans to investigate the entire semiconductor market segment. While U.S. tariffs on imports from most countries were reduced, China was hit with a 145% tariff, and it retaliated by halting rare earth mineral exports.
Our take: Thanks to the tariff exemptions, Apple will be able to maintain its iPhone production in China. Still, China’s decision to stop rare earth mineral exports will affect manufacturing efforts in India, which makes 20% of all iPhones. Depending on how the situation unfolds, iPhone prices could increase.

| | | | | In a recent federal court ruling, Google’s ad business was deemed a monopoly. The ruling determined that Google deprived rival companies of "the ability to compete." Though Google will file an appeal, its advertising business may still get broken up.
Meta, in a separate antitrust case, argued that it has no monopoly on social media platforms, since iMessage outperforms Facebook Messenger on iOS. The company used court documents containing competitive assessments but failed to redact sensitive data from Apple, Snap, and Google.
Our take: Google has yet to propose remedies in its antitrust case, so the company could opt to alter its existing contracts or sell its advertising business. Meta’s lawsuit, meanwhile, has yet to conclude. The failure to redact sensitive information could put a strain on Meta’s relationships with Apple, Snap, and Google.

iOS 18.5, meanwhile, received its second developer beta, as did nearly all of Apple’s major software platforms. The iPhone maker also shared how it plans to improve Apple Intelligence by letting users opt into on-device AI training.
Our take: It's important to keep your operating system up-to-date. Apple’s latest security fixes ensure that bad actors have a more difficult time obtaining your private user data. iOS 18.5 doesn’t add any new features, and it remains to be seen whether Apple’s AI training plan will yield results.
