| WWDC 2025 is mere days away, and we’ve heard a great deal about Apple’s next-gen operating systems. iOS 26 is set to bring a radical redesign and improvements to the Camera, Messages, Music, Notes, and Safari apps. visionOS 26, meanwhile, is expected to focus largely on game-related enhancements.
Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters. |
|
| | | | iOS 26 might deliver significant improvements to the Camera, Mail, Messages, Music, Notes, and Safari apps, according to two reports. Supposedly, Messages will receive an in-app poll feature, background options, and live translation functionality, while Notes will gain markdown support.
visionOS 26, meanwhile, may focus on game-related enhancements, as the software will supposedly introduce support for spatial controllers, such as the PlayStation VR2. As for macOS, a new rumor suggests it will bear the name Tahoe, which aligns with Apple’s tradition of California place names for macOS.
Our take: The sources behind some of the alleged iOS 26 feature leaks are anonymous, meaning that there’s no established track or indication of their reliability. Apple’s next-gen operating systems will debut on Monday, June 9, so we’ll see soon enough if the rumors were true or not.

| | | | | Two updated MagSafe charging pucks, which both support the Qi 2.2 standard with a maximum charging speed of 50W, have appeared in regulatory filings. This means the iPhone 17 could theoretically charge wirelessly at almost double the speed previously possible. A separate rumor suggests the device will get a new display with a fixed refresh rate of 120Hz.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold, meanwhile, could debut with a 2nm A20 chip. The system-on-chip might be 15% faster than the iPhone 17 Pro, while also using about 30% less power. The 2nm chip process is reportedly an improvement over the second-gen 3nm 3NP process planned for the A19, which will debut with the iPhone 17 range.
Our take: Multiple rumors have suggested that the iPhone 17 will receive a display with a 120Hz refresh rate, though previous reports have suggested there would be ProMotion support. 50W wireless fast charging seems likely given the regulatory filings, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the iPhone 18 Pro.

| | | | | Apple's eventual rollout of Apple Intelligence in China has hit delays, thanks to regulatory issues raised in response to President Trump's tariffs. With other smartphones and devices already on the market with their own AI features, the gulf in AI technology could widen as the regulators hold off from approving Apple's proposals.
In Europe, meanwhile, Apple has formally filed an appeal against the EU's ruling on interoperability, saying that it constitutes a massive privacy risk. The EU previously asked Apple to make its proprietary technology accessible to competitors, but Apple argued that "abuse of the DMA's interoperability mandate could expose private information."
Our take: Apple is already behind in China, as other smartphone manufacturers have already rolled out their generative AI features in the country. The debut of Apple Intelligence in China hinges upon the political situation, so it’s unclear when it will happen.
